Champions’ Parade or TOP 100 of «Wine of the Year»

Dinner with Dom Pérignon at Vincents

What: A five course Dom Pérignon dinner at «Vincents» led by chef Mārtiņš Rītiņš. Special guest – Justine Proy from Dom Pérignon. Moderators - Aigars Nords and Gints Sniedze, Dom Pérignon brand ambassador in Latvia.

Champagnes of the dinner:

Dom Pérignon 2006
Dom Pérignon 2005
Dom Pérignon P2 1998
Dom Pérignon Rose 2003
Dom Pérignon Rose P2 1995

The legendary Dom Pérignon is one of the rare champagne houses that can take a real pride in its extensive library of champagnes matured over an extended period of time on their lees in their cellars. Perhaps this is why Dom Pérignon was so intent on researching and perfecting the maturing cycles of their wines. Richard Geoffroy, the legendary chef de cave of Dom Pérignon, has revealed that Dom Pérignon wines go through three maturing cycles, which he distinctively calls plénitudes.

At the dinner, champagnes of the first plénitude was represented by the latest Dom Pérignon 2006, which took on the responsible role of the apéritif. The first plénitude was also represented by the extremely limited Dom Pérignon 2005, which delighted guests in the first part of the evening, and afterwards by Dom Pérignon Rose 2003, ceaselessly praised by the critics.

The second plénitude was represented by Dom Pérignon P2 1998. The most avid Dom Pérignon fans would remember that the first plénitude of this exclusive champagne appeared on store shelves back in 2005, with the second one following only nine years later in 2014. Arguably the biggest star of the night was Dom Pérignon Rose P2 1995 of the second plénitude: this rare rose champagne has undergone nearly twenty years of maturation on lees in the Dom Pérignon cellars, is extremely limited and was brought to Riga solely in honour of the special Riga Wine & Champagne dinner.

At the end of the evening the guests had an exclusive chance to purchase Dom Pérignon wines of the third plénitude: the limited Dom Pérignon P3 1983 and Dom Pérignon P3 1982, as well as the nearly half a century old Dom Pérignon P3 1971.

«Jean Leon - Spanish Success Story» by Mireia Torres

Mireia Torres of Torres, the legendary Spanish winemaking family, visited the Baltic states for the first time to share her wines of Jean Leon winery from several decades up to 1970s.

The renowned Jean Leon winery’s Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet wines as well as a plethora of rareViña La Scala Cabernet Sauvignon Gran Reserva wines of several decades up to 1970s. By the way, Viña La Scala Cabernet Sauvignon Gran Reserva is Spain's first Cabernet Sauvignon with its first vintage in 1969 - in the tasting we were having a 1975, a precious wine from the very first decade of the wine straight from Torres's cellars.

Wines of the tasting:

2014 Jean Leon 3055 Chardonnay
2013 Jean Leon ‘Vinya Gigi’ Chardonnay
2011 Jean Leon ‘Vinya Palau’ Merlot
2007 Jean Leon ‘Vinya La Havre’ Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva
2003 Jean Leon ‘Vinya La Scala’ Cabernet Sauvignon Gran Reserva
1996 Jean Leon ‘Vinya La Scala’ Cabernet Sauvignon Gran Reserva
1982 Jean Leon ‘Vinya La Scala’ Cabernet Sauvignon Gran Reserva
1975 Jean Leon ‘Vinya La Scala’ Cabernet Sauvignon Gran Reserva

Torres is a name that needs no introduction: in the wine world’s hall of fame it is right up there with Antinori, Mondavi, Rothschild and other prominent winemaking dynasties. Mireia Torres represents the family’s values in the fifth generation. The youngest daughter of Miguel Agustín Torres (president and owner of Bodegas Torres), Mireia was born in 1969, studied in Montpellier (France), honed her skills internationally and is now at the helm of Jean Leon and Torres Prioratwineries. This was Mireia’s first time in the Baltics and Riga, where she participated in the Riga Wine & Champagne festival to give an insight into Spanish wines and present the excellent Jean Leon's Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet wines as well as several very rare and historical Viña La Scala Cabernet Sauvignon Gran Reserva wines of various decades.

About Jean Leon: Jean Leon is one of Spain’s leading boutique wineries run by the Torres family. Jean Leon is named after its founder, all-round icon Ceferino Carrión. A Spanish emigrant who arrived in the USA after the end of World War II, Cerefino got a job in a bar owned by Frank Sinatra, earned the good graces of Hollywood’s celebrities and opened La Scala, one of the most popular restaurants in Hollywood, together with James Dean. Having changed his name to Jean Leon, he travelled around the world only to later return to Spain where he opened his winery in Penedès, Catalonia.

Nordea Great Bubble Parade 2015

How many different champagnes have you tried? 10? How about 100? The Bubble Parade once again was the Baltic's biggest parade of champagne and sparkling wines, a unique walk-around tasting with more than 100 French champagnes and their noblest «cousins» – Prosecco, Franciacorta, Cava, Cap Classique, Cremant, all for your tasting and enjoyment.

What does one do in such a Bubble Parade? First, you show up. We give you a pretty glass and brief directions on where and what to try. The rest is up to you.

You can try and do the impossible – walk around the entire counter of the Parade, have a sip of each and every champagne available and talk to all the vendors and producers in hopes of finding your favorite champagne.

You can take detailed notes in the Parade catalogue about which drink is sweeter, more sour or more bubbly, which one to choose for your spouse, mom, business partner or birthday guests. The catalogues, of course, were available to everybody.

You can just chill out. Take the first champagne at hand, sit down, enjoy it slowly while watching the other beautiful participants of the Bubble Parade.

You can also listen to the Bubble ABC. They were in form of short informal lectures with a glass in hand, right in the middle of the Bubble Parade. The leading sommeliers of Latvia and Peter Liem on of leading champagne experts were telling about the very basics in simple words, answering all questions on the matter and recommending other things that were worth trying.

Then you can go to the «Bubbledogs Lounge». We «stole» this idea from the cult bar «Bubbledogs» in London – they serve only gourmet hot dogs with champagne. Why don’t we take it to a new level here in Riga? Gourmet hotdogs crafted by chef Maris Jansons were available to all participants of the Bubble Parade in exchange for a symbolic fee.

And we kept it going all day long and offered to everybody to choose the most suitable time for the bubble session: 10.00 to 13.00, 14.00 to 17.00 or 18.00 to 21.00.

An international panel of prominent experts, led by the all-knowing Michael Schuster www.michaelschusterwine.com performed a «blind tasting» of more than four hundred wines of the world available in Latvia to pick the champions at the «Wine of The Year 2014» competition. Michael worked together with the most respected Latvian wine professionals, the leading sommeliers from Latvia and the Baltics, winners of Baltic and Latvian sommelier championships: Raimonds Tomsons («Vincents», president of the Latvian Association of Sommeliers, winner of multiple Latvian, Baltic and European wine contests), Valentina Grandane (one of the most highly experienced wine lecturer in Latvia), Ronalds Petersons (winner of the Baltic Sommelier Championship), Arunas Starkus (president of the Lithuanian Association of Sommeliers, AIWS), Aigars Lukstins (winner of the Sommelier Championship), Gints Sniedze (winner of the Baltic Sommelier Championship), Romans Komars (former president of the Latvian Association of Sommeliers), Martins Pilens, Aigars Nords (founder of the festival, AIWS).

Degustation format: «Lexus Champions’ Parade»was a walk-around type tasting session, i.e., after arrival each participant received a glass and the «parade plan» (the list of wines) and then everybody had a chance to try all the champions in great company, getting advices from sommeliers and hopefully learning a lot of new things.

The Great Bubble Parade 2013

How many kinds of champagne have you tried before? 10? How about 50? 100? The Bubble Parade was the biggest parade of champagnes and sparkling wines ever – a mass degustation unseen in Riga. For real. On March 9 there were more than 100 French champagnes represented in Riga along with their noblest «cousins» – Prosecco, Franciacorta, Cava, Cap Classique, Cremant, all for tasting and enjoyment.

We warn you – it won’t be an easy task, there will be a helluva lot of champagnes.

You can take detailed notes in the Parade catalogue about which drink is sweeter, more sour or more bubbly, which one to choose for your spouse, mom, business partner or birthday guests. The catalogues, of course, were available to everybody.

You can also listen to the Bubble ABC. It was be like a short informal lecture with a glass in hand, right in the middle of the Bubble Parade. The leading sommeliers of Latvia, such as Raimonds Tomsons and Janis Kalkis, was telling about the very basics in simple words, answering all the questions on the matter and recommending other things that are worth trying.
